ROUND TABLE 1
New economic and financial order: What the future holds for cooperatives

The economy has and continues to undergo profound changes. The financial fragility of businesses and the lack of job security dominate economic news. Social cohesiveness is significantly affected. People the world over are calling for stability, transparency and accountability from political, financial and business leaders. The dominant business model alone cannot define a new economic order. In a context of profound socioeconomic change, what does the future hold for this still largely unknown business model?

  • Stéphan Bureau, Facilitator, Canada

ROUND TABLE 2 – STUDY REPORTS
The role of cooperatives and mutuals in the global economy – From theory to practice

The economy is in transition. Recent crises have demonstrated its fragility. Yet, even in the most affected countries, cooperatives have managed to survive. As they are more resilient, they can ensure equitable access to goods and services and maintain quality jobs and viable businesses, thereby having a stabilizing effect on the economy. It is widely recognized that cooperatives and mutuals have fared better through times of turbulence and are part of the solution to social, humanitarian and environmental crises. But what is the reality? What position do cooperatives and mutuals currently have in the world? What position should they have?

This round table will announce the results of the following event and studies:

ROUND TABLE 3 - STUDY REPORT
Cooperatives and mutuals, a distinctive and effective business model – An alternative to the prevailing business model

The public often perceives cooperatives and mutuals as being unconcerned with their performance. In fact, they have demonstrated their financial stability and resilience through the current global economic crisis by preserving the delicate balance between the drive to meet member needs, the nature of their governance and the need to remain competitive. What did they do to stand out? What levers of growth are available to cooperatives and mutuals?

This round table will announce the results of the following study:

CASE STUDY
Doing business our way - Winning strategies for doing business differently

Technological breakthroughs, globalization, increased competition and a dwindling understanding of the cooperative model are causing members to stray from their cooperatives. No longer captive, they comparison shop and buy from the competition and their community participation is minimal. At the same time, they seek recognition, consideration, accessibility and proximity. How can the virtual distance of members be reconciled with meeting their needs and maintaining a vibrant community? What leverage is available to cooperatives and mutuals? How can they remain agile and innovative and become leaders in markets that are constantly evolving?

Panelists:

ROUND TABLE 5 / STUDY REPORT
Funding the future: Emerging strategies in cooperative financing and capitalization

In the face of global market turmoil and increased regulatory scrutiny over the past five years, are cooperatives facing the same financing and capitalization challenges as the larger market? How does the unique structure of a cooperative make it easier or more difficult to achieve adequate capitalization? What is the impact of the changes to financial reporting standards (IFRS) and banking and insurance sector regulations (Basel III, Solvency II)? How have the capital structure and sources of financing changed in the aftermath of the financial crises? These are some of the questions that will guide the round table discussion.

MINISTERIAL ROUND TABLE
A role to play – global socio-political influence

Despite being an economic powerhouse that exerts a regulating effect on economic development, offers equitable access to goods and services, serves as a classroom for democracy and provides diversity in business models, the cooperative movement has little political influence. Yet, it is a sustainable solution to global crises. Clear recognition of these unique characteristics is sorely and urgently needed. This round table will introduce and discuss the conditions that States impose through their policies, laws and regulations to support or promote the development of cooperatives.

A new role to play – Thinking differently, thinking cooperatively

Cooperatives and mutuals are clearly a solution for economic stability over the coming decade, if not the next millennium. Though they often appear during times of crisis, they offer an effective business model able to meet various needs in all sectors, even during periods of affluence. What does the future hold for them? What place will they have on the global stage? Our experts will answer these thorny questions to provide their insight into shape of things to come.
