Biography

Riccardo Petrella is an economist, political scientist and alter-globalist. He has a doctorate in Sociology and Political Science from the University of Florence, Italy, and is Professor of Human Ecology at the Swiss Italian University’s Academy of Architecture. He is also Professor Emeritus at the Catholic University of Louvain in Belgium.

Following the publication of his book, “The Water Manifesto”, in 1997, he founded the International Committee for the Global Water Contract, where he is Secretary General. He also heads the Acquedotto Pugliese, the water management corporation in the Puglia region of southern Italy.

Recipient of six honorary doctorates from universities in Europe and Canada, Riccardo Petrella was appointed Director of the European Center for Research in Social Sciences of UNESCO in 1970, where his research focused on regional development, technological innovation and transnational comparative research. He led the FAST (Forecasting and Assessment in Science and Technology) Program until 1994.

His latest book, “Pour une nouvelle narration du monde” (in French only), was published in 2007. It was unanimously received as a thought-provoking invitation to find alternative solutions to the world’s major issues.
